What is Music Publishing?

When we say "Music Publishing" ideas come to mind like copyright, royalties, record distribution, music industry, being discovered, record deal and getting signed. Since these ideas first became popular, the internet happened. Yes we still have record stores and radio stations, but now we have social media, streaming, digital downloads and analytics.

Now, musicians don't need to sign a 400-page record contract with a multinational record company and pay $800/hr to record an album in a world-renown recording studio with a million dollar recording console and a hundred different vintage outboard processors. Musicians can make a really good record on a modest budget and sell it online, while keeping all the rights to their musical creations.
